Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970.  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by falling
merchandise:
a)Receiving Department -  Employees with the job title of receiver, who
unload
merchandise from tractor trailers, were using a Melcher ramp model 1236
seriel # 121026  improperly in conjunction with a pallet jack.
Additionally
they were not securing the ramp to the body of the trailers with the
safety pin
supplied by the manufacture.  On or about 09/25/95.
ABATEMENT NOTES:
Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to
1.Use a proper ramp that is designed to be used with a pallet jack.
2.Train employees to recognize and avoid work activities that are unsafe,
such as exposing themselves to falling merchandise during unloading
operations.
3.Insure that the trailer bodies will accept the safety pin that is
provided
with the ramp.
