Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to reoccurring fires/explosions resulting from sparks and/or embers igniting material in the material handling system: COMPANY: EMPLOYEES WERE EXPOSED TO FIRE AND EXPLOSIONS HAZARDS CREATED BY SPARKS, EMBERS OR OTHER IGNITION SOURCES RESULTING FROM FOREIGN OBJECTS SUCH AS, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, STONES AND METAL SHAVINGS BEING INTRODUCED INTO THE MATERIAL HANDLING SYSTEM. ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD, AMONG OTHERS, IS TO FOLLOW ESTABLISHED GUIDELINES SUCH AS NFPA 664, WHICH INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS: WHERE DUST EXPLOSION HAZARDS EXISTS IN EQUIPMENT, ROOMS, BUILDINGS, OR OTHER ENCLOSURES SHALL BE PROVIDED WITH EXPLOSION VENTING OR IN THE ALTERNATIVE, AN APPROVED EXPLOSION SUPPRESSION SYSTEM. (NFPA 664, 3-1.2)
