Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Tripping and falling around chemical tanks due to inadequate lighting in the plating areas. Levels of illumination measured were less than 10 footcandles at or near the tanks containing corrosive chemicals. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of correcting the hazard would be to provide lighting, as recommended by American National Standards Institute in its publication on Industrial Lighting sponsored by the Illuminating Engineering Society, at a level of 30 footcandles.
