Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burn injuries from the potential dust explosion hazard that could have resulted from, or been exacerbated by the lack of any dust collection system with deflagration venting or a listed explosion suppression system: (a)Half Round Area - Employees sanded semi-circular wood trim pieces using a Vega belt sander with a six (6) inch wide belt. The sander which produces very fine particles of wood was not provided with any type of dust collection system with deflagration venting or a listed suppression system, on or about May 16, 2003. VERIFICATION REQUIRED AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THESE HAZARDS INCLUDES, FOLLOWING NFPA 664, STANDARD FOR THE PREVENTION OF FIRES AND EXPLOSIONS IN WOOD PROCESSING AND WOODWORKING FACILITIES, 1998 EDITION, INCLUDING, BUT NOT LIMITED TO, PROVIDING SANDING MACHINES WITH A DUST PICKUP, DUST-CONVEYING AND DUST-COLLECTION SYSTEM WITH DEFLAGRATION VENTING OR A LISTED EXPLOSION SUPPRESSION SYSTEM.
