General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employement which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: FOUNDRY: The employer did not ensure that hazardous conditions conducive to eruptions were eliminated prior to commensing operations. Routine maintenance and/or safety procedures are recommended by the manufacturer for the Dura-Line furnance system. And among these recommended procedures the following maintenance and/or safety procedures are acceptable abatement methods: 1. Follow the manufacturer's routine maintenance checklist which refers to daily, monthly and annual checks for specific equipment within the furnace system. 2. Post a copy of the manufacturer's safety prcautions in a conspicuous location so operators and maintenance personnel will be familiar with them. 3. Ensure that all charging material is dry or free of moisture before charging the furnace. 4. Use crucibles which are suitable to the materials being used in the melt. The crucibles should be designed for the materials and temperatures used. 5. Ensure that the disconnect or ground leak detector bypass is operating properly. If a leak of molten metal is suspected, cease operation and empty the furnace. 6. Ensure that conductive crucibles are kept clean. Slag or dross buildup in the crucible may cause over-heating and shorten the life of the crucible. 7. Keep shields, covers and other protective devices in place at all times to protect employees. 8. Minimize expansion or cracking of the crucible by following the manufacturer's recommended procedures for the partial dumping of the furnace.
