Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Jobsite: Two employee stood on a stair platform that was not adequately supported during the erection process. The platform and attached staircase collapsed, subjecting the employees to a 10' fall, injuring one employee. Feasible and acceptable methods of abatement would be to: 1) Follow acceptable construction practices, including using permanent and/or temporary supports where required. 2) Receive approval from the responsible Registered Professional Engineer before deviating from the sealed drawings stipulated by contract in any manner that may affect the integrity of the structure. 3) Perform all welds in accordance with the American Welding Society strucural welding code.
