Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to methyl ethyl ketone peroxide while spraying molds to make 9 feet diameter resin rings. a)Production Floor - On January 31, 1995, 2 employees were exposed to methyl ethyl ketone peroxide at 5 minute ceiling levels of 9, 10, 15 and 17 milligram per cubic meter. These exposures are between 6 and 11 times the ACGIH and NIOSH recommendation of 1.5 milligrams per cubic meter. Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard is to implement engineering and/or administrative controls which include, but are not limited to, the following item: 1.Prohibit smoking in the work area to prevent heat, spark and ignition sources. 2. Prohibit eating and drinking in the work area. 3. Substitute with a chemical exhibiting less toxic properties. 4. Use of properly designed local exhaust ventilation in immediate spraying area to remove large quantities of MEKP from the workplace.
