Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of having an arm struck and injured by the dumbwaiter car when the car is entering or leaving the landing zones outside both the Saw Room and the Dry House. Some feasible methods of correction would be to install an emergency stop and brake at the hoistway opening, so that it is immediately accessible and will arrest the movement of the dumbwaiter car. Another feasible abatement would be to provide the hoistway with interlocked doors that completely covers the opening to prevent hands from being placed inside when the car is in motion.
