Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a potentially uncontrolled chemical reaction that could
result in toxic gases and
liquids or impact injuries:
(a) Cyanide storage area:
On or about 2/15/00, employees were exposed to the hazard of a potential
chemical
reaction evolving poisonous gases from storage of incompatible chemicals
in the same
area.  Four 50 kilogram containers of solid potassium cyanide and one
container of solid
sodium cyanide were stored approximately 25 feet from an open 55 gallon
drum of
sulfuric acid, with no berm between them.
Among other methods, useful abatement methods include storing chemicals in
separate
areas, and ensuring that any chemicals received from suppliers are
immediately separated
from incompatible chemicals.le
