Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Employees were exposed to the hazards of being caught in/caught between the ingoing nip points of the rollers at the transfer area to the vertical belt. The emergency stop cord was not operable. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: 1. Provide special attention to areas when two or more pieces of equipment are interfaced, to ensure the presence of adequate guarding and safety devices. 2. Guards and safety devices shall be maintained in position and in safe repair. 3. Routine inspections and corrective maintenance measures shall be conducted to ensure that all guards and safety features are retained and function properly.
