Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to severe burns from 850 degrees fahrenheit molten zinc during
the galvanizing process when loads are attached to the load block hook
by unapproved devices:
a) Zinc Pot - employee's are exposed to burns from 850 degrees
fahrenheit molten zinc whenever a load is improperly attached to
the load block hook,  causing the load to fall into the zinc pot.
On 3/25/92, a steel load was attached to the load block hook by
wire which was severed by the steel portion of a punched hole in
the load.  The load fell and dropped into the zinc pot.

ABATEMENT NOTE:  Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable
abatement method to correct this hazard is to attach the load to
the block hook by a sling or other device, per Section 11-
3.2.2(b), American National Standards Institute, B30.11-1973,
Monorail Systems and underhung cranes.
