Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to titanium dust: WET DUST COLLECTOR, BADER TITANIUM POLISHING STATION: THE COMPANY HAD NOT DESIGNED AND INSTALLED AN ADEQUATE TITANIUM DUST COLLECTION SYSTEM WHERE TITANIUM PARTS ARE POLISHED. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO: A.REPLACE FLEXIBLE NEOPRENE DUCTS WITH SHORT, STRAIGHT METAL DUCTS WHICH ARE BONDED AND GROUNDED TO MINIMIZE THE ACCUMULATION OF STATIC ELECTRIC CHARGE. B.PROHIBIT SMOKING IN TITANIUM WORK AREAS. C.CLEAN UP TITANIUM FINES AND REMOVE SLUDGE FROM THE DUST SEPARATOR ON A DAILY BASIS. COVERED, VENTED STEEL CONTAINERS SHALL BE USED TO TRANSPORT SLUDGE TO A SAFE STORAGE AREA OR FOR DISPOSAL BY MIXING WITH SAND (IN A RATIO OF ONE PART SLUDGE TO FIVE PARTS SAND) AND BURIED. D.ASSURE THAT THE DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION AND WORKMANSHIP OF THE INSTALLED DUST COLLECTOR SYSTEM CONFORMS TO "INDUSTRIAL VENTILATION - A MANUAL OF RECOMMENDED PRACTICES" PUBLISHED BY THE AMERICAN CONFERENCE OF GOVERNMENTAL INDUSTRIAL HYGIENISTS.
