Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of
1970:  The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to falling loads and/or
lift parts:
(a)Shop Area - Employee(s) used hydraulic Dresser
Industries lifts to elevate automobiles. Manual safety
pins were not utilized to hold the lifts in the fully
extended position nor were jack stands provided, thus
exposing employees to injury from being struck by the
falling loads and/or lift parts.
Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct this hazard include:
(1)Replace the safety pin locking rod with a multiple
level one at which the safety pins may be placed at
various heights.
(2)Enforce the use of safety pins when the lifts are
extended above the floor.
(3)Provide jack stands to support vehicles when the lifts
are not fully extended.
