Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to:
(a) The hazard of being caught in running conveyor located in Box Storage.
On or about August 27, 1995 an employee who was tracking a belt on the U-5
Mathews conveyor, while it was in operation, sustained a serious injury to
the
right arm, as it became caught in the rotating parts of the conveyor. An
emergency stop was not installed in the immediate proximity of the work
area
as addressed by the American National Standard " Safety Standard for
Conveyors and Related EQUIPMENT ASME/ANSI B20.1-1987,
PARAGRAPH 5.11(C).
"AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE
ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS ..."
FURNISH THE CONVEYOR SYSTEM WITH EMERGENCY STOP
BUTTONS, PULL CORDS, LIMIT SWITCHES, OR SIMILAR
EMERGENCY STOP DEVICES, WHERE THE WORK IS ACTUALLY
PERFORMED.
