Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of
1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of the
spreader bar breaking and dropping the load causing  broken bones
and crushing injuries:
(a)Forge Department -  The spreader bar, used at the
annealing furnace, was homemade.  The dimensions of the
spreader bar were thirty two (32) inches long by two
(2) inches thick with a thirty nine (39) inch reach.
The thickness of the steel bars was five eighth (5/8)
inches.  The spreader did not have any capacity marked
on it and was showing signs of wear, in that the main
support bar was bending.  Employees were lifting 400
pounds out of the annealing furnace with the spreader
bar.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD
TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO RATE AND MARK THE CAPACITY OF THE
SPREADER BAR.
