Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment
and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed
to severe burns from steam
explosions when dropping the bottom drop of the cupola onto wet sand
and/or water:
(a)Cupola Room, Front & Pine Streets, Hamburg, PA -  Employee(s) were
exposed to a rapid
steam expansion/explosion while performing a cuploa bottom drop onto wet
sand and/or water.
Two employees received severe burns that required hospitalization from the
steam
expansion/explosion that occurred on September 22, 2006.
VERIFICATION REQUIRED
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO
CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS TO ENSURE THAT THE AREA UNDER THE DROP IS FREE OF
LIQUIDS/WET SAND (REF. ANSI STANDARD Z241.2 AND AFS CUPOLA HANDBOOK).T
