Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of
1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of heat
related illnesses from working in the laundry room where
employees work in high heat conditions with no ventilation:
a.Employees who were washing, drying, and folding laundry
in the laundry room were exposed to heat stress
conditions exceeding the reccomended levels set forth
by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial
Hygienists (ACGIH). Employees were working in a
nonventilated
room that had a Wet Bulb Globe Temperature
Index between 71 and 72 degrees Celcius which is twice
the reccomended level for a light work load.
AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD
TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS:
1.TO INSTALL VENTILATION SYSTEM THAT WILL EXHAUST
HUMIDIFIED AIR AS WELL AS PROVIDE FRESH AIR.
2.ESTABLISH A HEAT STRESS PROGRAM THAT INVOLVES TRAINING
OF EMPLOYEES AND SURVEILLANCE OF WORKING CONDITIONS.
