Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety & Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in
that, employees were
exposed to fall hazards when using a 20-foot truck to cater MD-80 aircraft
while the truck
platform was at a distance no closer than 24 inches from the aircraft and
when catering other
aircraft where the extendable side guardrails were fully retracted.

a.  Employees were exposed to fall hazards when using a 20-foot truck to
cater
MD-80 aircraft while the servicing platform was no closer than 24 inches
away
from the aircraft.
b.  On January 6, 2000, there were several instances where the extendable
guardrails were fully retracted while employees loaded catering equipment
onto
the aircraft exposing them to fall hazards.
"ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION IS REQUIRED FOR THIS ITEM".
a.  One feasible abatement method among others would be to ensure that the
employees
utilize 16-foot trucks equipped with low profile tires for servicing the
MD-80 aircraft.
b.  One feasible abatement method among others would be to ensure that
employees extend the guardrails when loading and/or unloading catering
equipment across the platform to and from aircraft and to enforce the use
of the
guardrails at these times.
