Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to sudden inclined movement of motors attached to an overhead trolley conveyor: (a)Paint Department: The overhead trolley conveyor was unsafe in that some of the backstops on the inclined and/or declined sections were damaged and inadequately spaced, preventing them from stopping the uncontrolled lowering of motors. Among other methods, a feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to: Repair or replace the broken backstops and space them to adequately limit the uncontrolled lowering of a motor. Determine the cause of the uncontrolled lowering of the motors and take steps to prevent these occurrences.
