Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a)Employee(s) were exposed to the hazard of fire and explosion in that Hydrogen used in the C-1 humpback furnace in the #1 Furnace room was not contained within the furnace or vented to a safe location. Among other abatement methods, one feasible and useful abatement method is to follow the manufactures modification which are to: Contain the hydrogen within the furnace, venting any exiting hydrogen to a safe location such as burn off stacks on each end and minimizing air infiltration with nitrogen curtains on each end of the inclined tunnels.
