Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to falling loads:
a)  An employee, mechanic, was performing service work under an
automobiles in the
bay number 5 of the Jaguar Service Center.  The car was suspended by a
Globe model
FSN-28 lift.  The safety device for preventing the lift from dropping in
the advent of a
hydraulic system failure was not functioning thus exposing employees to
injury from
being struck by falling loads.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazard is
to provide an automatic mechanical device to hold the lift in the fully
extended position at rated
load capacity.
