Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling loads and/or automotive lift parts: (a) Auto Service Department: Employees use a Globe Hoist Company, single post semi- hydraulic lift, Type 10BS, Serial #96613 to lift automobiles. The automatic mechanical fail safe latch device was clogged with grease and did not deploy to hold the lift in the fully extended position. Employees were exposed to injury from being struck by falling loads and/or lift parts. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement is to thoroughly clean and lubricate the fail-safe latch mechanism so that it deploys automatically as it was designed and to inspect this latch on a regular basis for proper function. No abatement certification or documentation required.tion
