Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crush hazards created by the use of an automobile lifting device, which did not have a locking device to ensure compliance with American National Standard ANSI/ALI B153.1 - 1990, Section 4.1.11, Automotive Lifts - Safety Requirements for construction, care, and use: (a) The hydraulic automobile hoist at first work station on the South side of the service area, used to lift cars, in the fully extended position, thereby exposing employees to a crush hazard. Feasible means of abatement include installation of a replacement locking device. (b) The hydraulic automobile hoist on the North side of the service area, used to lift cars, was not equipped with a functional automatic locking device, thereby exposing employees to a crush hazard. Feasible means of abatement include repair of the locking device.
