Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a) Location: Jobsite, 40 Buttonwood Avenue, Haverhill, MA; On or about 6/16/95, employees were exposed to the hazard of a roof truss collapse while installing trusses on a building without utilizing temporary lateral bracing. One feasible and acceptable method among others to correct this hazard when installing trusses is to: 1. Always use temporary bracing during erection to hold the trusses until permanent bracing is in place. 2. Install the proper lateral brace according to the specific truss design. 3. Sufficiently anchor or restrain the lateral brace with diagonal brace to prevent truss movement. 4. Make sure the bracing members are a minimum of 2" x 4" at least 8 feet in length and lapped at least 2 trusses. 5. Make sure all cross and diagonal braces run on an approximate 45 degree angle.
