Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a. Melt Shop - Employees were exposed to injuries associated with molten metal when allowed to work in the vicinity of a defective arc furnace which had been improperly charged with elongated scrap. Among other methods, feasible methods to correct these hazards are: 1. Develop safe distances for working near operating arc furnaces. 2. Do not allow employees to be near an operating furnace when its lid has been removed. 3. Develop and implement procedures for properly charging arc furnaces.
