Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of being caught in the rotating parts of the
pipe threader:
In the basement storage area, an employee operating the Rigid pipe
threader, model 300,
company number FJM 78, was exposed to the hazard of being entangled in
rotating parts, due
to the fact that the threader was not equipped with a footswitch that
shuts off power to the
machine when the operator's foot is removed from the footswitch.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct this hazards is
to install a footswitch in accordance with the manufacturer's operator's
manual.
