Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: employees working in the Sterling Room were exposed to the potential of being struck by falling Super Sacks weighing up to 2,000 pounds. The sacks are raised over head and held in a position over the silos while employees reach under the sacks to untie the dispensing chute built into the sacks. (a)Sterling Room - On or about February 7, 2003, the employer did not provide a method of safeguarding employees reaching under the Super Sacks, thereby exposing employees to the hazards of suspended loads. Feasible means of abatement to correct this hazard include, but not limited to, (1) use of a hook to reach under the Super Sacks to untie the cord on the dispensing chute, (2) installation of a cradle that the Super Sacks can rest on while employees reach under to untie the cord on the dispensing chute. Applicable Standards: ANSI B30.16 - 1973; Overhead Hoists Standard ANSI B30.20 - Below the Hook Lifting Device Standard Certification, and documentation/evidence of abatement is required. Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be submitted within ten (10) calendar days after the abatement date.ment
