Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
(a)1/16/96, Employees were exposed to the hazard of serious crushing
injuries from
the dropping of hydraulic automotive lifts while employees were working
under
vehicles on the lifts.  Safety locking devices (pins, latches or dogs)
were not
provided on the lifts in the service area.
Feasible and acceptable methods among other to correct the hazard is to:
1.)Install automatic mechanical safety locking devices on each lift.
2.)Instruct/train employees in the proper use of mechanical safe locking
devices for hydraulic lifts.
3.)Conduct periodic inspections of the lifts as recommended by the lift
manufacturer to insure that the safety locking devices and all other
components are in safe operating condition.
4.)Post manufacturers' operating manuals for reference.
5.)Modifying lifts only after prior written consent of the lift
manufacturer.
