Section 5(a)(1): The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: (a)On July 21,1994 at the jobsite: Three (3) freight elevators were in service which did not have both a rear and front car enclosure gate as required by ANSI/ASME A17.3-1986 and BOCA 1984. Employees were exposed to serious fracture injuries should the load shift and force them into the moving wall or floor, or should they trip or faint. Feasible and acceptable methods, among others, to correct the hazard are to: (1)Comply with ANSI/ASME A17.3-1986 and BOCA 1984. (2)Fully enclose the freight elevator cars as recommended by standards. (3)Prevent employees from riding on elevators. A search of the OSHA Standards has been conducted and there are no applicable standards.
