Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in
that:
(a)The Mitsubishi laser cutting machine, model ML-5036D, used to cut steel
presented the hazard of exposure to ultraviolet radiation to employees'
eyes and
skin.  One feasible means of abatement would be to implement a laser safety
program as described in the American National Standard for Safe Use of
Lasers -
Z136.1 - 2000.  Among other items this would include designating a laser
safety
officer, training of employees regarding hazards, compliance with the
manufacturer's specified nominal hazard zone, implementation of medical
surveillance, and establishing a class 4 laser controlled area using the
information
from the calculation of the nominal hazard zone.
Certification, with date and method of abatement required.
Certification of abatement is required by 29 CFR Part 1903 and is to be
submitted within ten (10)
calendar days after the abatement date.ment
