Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being caught in an unguarded conveyor belt: (a) Slag Dump, Separating Plant; Emergency disconnect cords were not installed within easy reach of the conveyor at the #3 Slag Operator pick off station. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install emergency pull cords, stop buttons, or kill switches along the conveyor line.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to severe burns and explosions: (a) Slag Dump Area; On October 17, 18, 21 and 22, 1996, a(n) employee(s) was(were) exposed to slag buttons breaking open and molten material coming in contact with standing water/moisture. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to let the slag cool longer in the slag pots to eliminate any molten material and to eliminate any water/moisture in the area./moisture
