5(a)(1): of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being struck and/or being crushed by automobiles being serviced: THE FOLLOWING HYDRAULIC LIFTS HAD SAFETY LOCKING DEVICES THAT DID NOT FUNCTION PROPERLY. AFTER BEING RAISED THE LIFTS SAFETY LOCKS DID NOT DEPLOY: A. The Hunter lift (located in a front bay along the south wall.) B. Unmarked lift (located in a front bay beside the joining wall with the customer sales room.) AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE: 1. OBTAIN THE AUTOMOBILE LIFTS OPERATORS MANUAL, AND POST WITHIN THE SHOP AREA. 2. DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A MAINTANENCE SCHEDULE TO INSURE THAT PROPER OPERATING PARAMETERS ARE MET. THESE INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO: A. MANUFACTURES RECOMENDATIONS (SEE OPERATORS MANUAL). B. LOCK OUT TAG OUT PROCEDURES AND PROGRAM. 3. PROVIDE EMPLOYEE TRAINING, ON HAZARD RECOGNITION AND SAFE OPERATION PROCEDURES AS WELL AS ENFORCEMENT OF THE PROCEDURES. 4. DEVELOP AND IMPLEMENT A PROGRAM TO REMOVE DEFECTIVE LIFTS FROM USE. Note: Refer to 29 CFR 1910.147 Lockout/tagout standard.
