Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. FACILITY: Employees were exposed to the hazards of electrical shock from hoists were observed in potentially unsafe conditions. These included but were not limited to the following: Sweco Area a) Budget One ton hoist, no serial numbers, in which the pendant control was observed hanging from the motor by it's internal wiring. Facility b) Several Budget and CM one ton hoists, no numbers available, were missing the safety latches on the hooks. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard would be to establish an inspection and maintenance program complying with ANSI B30.16, The American National Standard for Underhung Hoists which requires unsafe conditions disclosed by hoist inspections be corrected by adjustment, repair, or replacement before placing the hoist back in service.
