Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees.
FACILITY: Employees were exposed to the hazards of electrical shock from
hoists were
observed in potentially unsafe conditions. These included but were not
limited to the following:
Sweco Area
a) Budget One ton hoist, no serial numbers, in which the pendant control
was observed hanging
from the motor by it's internal wiring.
Facility
b) Several Budget and CM one ton hoists, no numbers available, were
missing the safety latches
on the hooks.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to
correct the hazard
would be to establish an inspection and maintenance program complying with
ANSI B30.16, The
American National Standard for Underhung Hoists which requires unsafe
conditions disclosed
by hoist inspections be corrected by adjustment, repair, or replacement
before placing the hoist
back in service.
