Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crush hazards from unexpected falling vehicles: (a) Service Shop Employees use a Globe double piston inground automotive lift to elevate automobiles for service and/or repair. The lift unexpectedly drops a distance of 6 inches while employees are working underneath the raised vehicle, and the lift was not promptly removed from service. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to comply with American National Standards Institute B153.1 for Automotive Lifts.
