Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which
were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were
exposed to fractures and crushing injuries:
a)  Mechanic employees use hydraulic single post and twin
post front to rear automotive lifts to elevate vehicles
for service and/or repair.  All of the lifts are not fitted
with automatic mechanical devices to hold the lift(s) in
the fully extended position thus exposing the mechanics
to injury, on or about January 29, 1993.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard is to install automatic mechanical devices, having a safety
factor of 3, to hold the lifts in the fully extended position at the
rated load capacity.  If a positive locking device is not feasible,
then auxiliary support device(s) that are capable of supporting
the rated capacity should be used.
