North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falling trusses: a)jobsite - on February 9, 1999, 33 out of 41 scissor type trusses erected on 2X8 inch top plates were not properly braced collapsed. As a result of that action two employees on a protected scaffold were injured by the collapsing trusses. (reference: Blue Ox Industries, Inc. plans and specifications for Beulah Baptist Church and Truss Plate Institute, HIB Summary Sheet, Commentary and Recommendations for Handling, Installing & Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses) Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard includes, but not limited to the following: 1.Ensure temporary bracing is installed following the truss manufacturer's plans and specifications for bracing. 2.In the absence of the truss manufacturer's plans and specifications use recommendations from the Truss Plate Institute pertaining to temporary bracing.
