Title 40.1-51.1.(a), Code of Virginia: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free of recognized hazards which were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: Blue Ridge Lumber Company, Circle Mill debarker, employee(s) cleaning the debarker are exposed to various hazards including tripping, slipping, falling and crushing hazards while attempting to clean bark shreds off the debarker. An employee was standing on the debarker attempting to clean materials when he lost his footing and fell, striking his head on one of the metal kickers on the debarker. One feasible method of abatement is to have the employee(s) remain on the platform deck, instead of working from the debarker and use a high pressure air or water hose to clean the bark shreds from the debarker.
