Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Potential needlestick due to mortician manipulating needles by hand, i.e., breaking needles by hand, removing and replacing needle in syringe by hand, and storing loose uncapped needles, exposing mortician to body fluids possibly contaminated with bloodborne pathogens. Needles and syringes are used in the morgue by mortician for tissue filling during body preparation following embalming. Among other methods, one feasible abatement method to correct the hazard is to use disposable needles and syringes in accordance with "universal precautions" as established by CDC or use of a reseating device.
