Section (5)(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: On 2/17/93 the employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees. Employees were exposed to the hazard of being crushed by a moving conveyor belt. The conveyor belt was not equipped with an emergency stop device and audible alarm to inform employees that the conveyor is about to start. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable method to remove the hazard is to: A) Install an alarm device which would be activated and continue for a fixed period of time with the initiation of the conveyor belt as stipulated in ASME B.20.1-1993, Section 5.11.2.(b)(1).
