General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Mechanics, who worked under hydraulic lifts in the service department were exposed to the hazards of being accidentally struck by automobiles or being caught between automobiles and the floor, because five hydraulic lifts did not have automatic mechanical safety devices that would have held the lifts in their fully extended positions in the event of an accidental hydraulic failure. A feasible method for correcting this hazard is to install pins or rods that would automatically engage rails or runways of the lifts and hold them in their fully extended positions. The pins or rods should be of a construction such that they would have an adequate safety factor as specified by the manufacturer of the liff; in accordance with sections 3.1.5 and 3.1.10 of ANSI B 153.1-1974.
