Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  the
employer did not furnish
employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized
hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death of serious physical harm to employees in
that employees were
exposed to the hazard of being struck by 500 pound bales of wool and being
crushed or knocked
to the floor.
a)  Lummus Baler Model # 132, J Baler - the company did not perform
adequate
regular maintenance of the baler. Because of this, employees are exposed
to the
hazard of being struck by 500 pound bales of wool. This happens when bales
are
misshapen in the compactor and unexpectedly fall from the machine onto
employees.   Observed 02/10/94.
NOTE: One feasible method of abatement would be to do a thorough
maintenance
inspection of the baler and then correct deficiencies.
