Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment or a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) Employees were allowed access to radiation in excess of the applicable maximum permissible exposure (MPF) limits during the operating of a Model S48 C02 laser manufactured by Coherent Laser Inc. in the operation of cutting and welding jet engine turbine componenets. EDM Dept. Laser Room. A method of preventing access to radiation in excess of the applicable MPE would be to provide a safety interlock for any portion of the protective housing which by design, can be removed or displaced (without the use of tools). Reference: ANSI Z136.1 1980.
