General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The %% employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to overhead hazard such as lifting/suspending loads over employees: The alleged violations below have been grouped because they involve similar or related hazards that may increase the potential for injury resulting from an accident. a) Merck-Sharpe-Dohme, Bldg 78, WP78 T-1 - An american 125 ton truck crane was observed lowering multiple suspended loads of steel floor beams. The beams weighed approximately 1000-1500 pounds each which were independently rigged from the auxillary hoist drum at the same time. Employees were exposed to this overhead hazard, 5/2/91. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to lift each load independently.
