Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to potential hazards of electric shocks and/or burns when working with and adjacent to energized electrical cables in underground manholes: a. Manhole #2, Bridge St. Station, Nashua, NH - Employees involved in the asbestos removal operation on energized electrical cables were not adequately protected from the hazards of electrical shocks and/or burns. One feasible method to protect employees doing this type of work is to deenergize the circuit being worked on and provide adequate insulation and thermal protection on all other energized cables that could be contacted while performing such work.
