Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of fire/explosion: a. Grinding/Sanding Area - The dust collection system was used for steel as well as aluminum when the air flows were less than 4500 fpm; the sludge was not disposed of on a daily basis; equipment and ducts were not bonded/grounded; ductwork was not smooth; and ducts/hoods were not arranged such that particles would fall into or be directed into them. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable means of abatement to correct the hazards is to install an aluminum dust collection system in accordance with NFPA 65-Standard for Processing and Finishing of Aluminum.
