Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of fire/explosion: a. Main Plant - The wood dust collection system was deficient in that incoming ducts were not protected by a spark detection and suppression system; air was recycled back into the plant without benefit of explosion suppression systems or abort dampers; employees in the area were not protected from dust explosions; the bag filters, located within the building itself, were not protected by explosion vents or by an explosion suppression system. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install a wood dust collection system in accordance with NFPA 6641987. %%
