Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: Plating Room: Drums and bags of cyanides and acids were stored and dispensed on the same pallet and gallon containers of acid and cyanide containing products were stored on the same shelf. In the event of a fire or other accidental circumstance, the acids and cyanides could mix, exposing employees to hydrogen cyanide gas. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is the designation and use of separate storage areas for acids and cyanides.
