General-duty citation text
Section 1-201(a) of Executive Order 12196 of February 26, 1980: The employ - er did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free fro m recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of severe burns while fighting fires due to the fact that their station/work uniforms were not in compliance with NFPA 1975. Fire fighters wore uniform s which were 65% polyester and 35% cotton under their protective outer cloth- ing. This presents a hazard because under extreme heat polyester will melt and could cause severe burns to the skin. Among other methods, one feasibl e and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide all fire fighters with station/work uniforms which are in compliance with NFPA 1975.
