Citation 1, item 1, issued to Barmet Aluminum Corporation dated 03/18/94
has been amended
to read as follows:
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
a)  In the Remelt Area, employees are required to place wet sows and/or
alloying
material(s) upon ledges inside melting furnace(s) where molten metal bath
is present thus
allowing these materials to fall/charged into the bath and cause an
eruption of the bath/materials
outside of the furnaces into work areas.  Among other methods, one
feasible and acceptable
abatement method to correct this hazard is as follows:  1)  Implement
practices for preheating
for maintaining charging materials in a dry condition;  2)  Implement
practices for preheating
materials away from molten bath;  3)  Implement practices for specific
methods to char
ge sows, pigs, scrap metal and alloying materials;  4)  Implement
practices for controlling
exposures to the remelt area(s);  5)  Implement practices for
instructing/training person
nel involved in this process; and 6) implement safety audits to measure
adequacy.
This amended citation must be posted with the original citation until the
amended violations have
been abated, or for three working days, whichever is longer.  The
employer has 15 days from
the date of receipt of this amended citation to contest those portions of
the original citation which
have been amended.  The contest period is not extended for the unamended
portions of the
original citation.
