Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of incompatible chemical storage which would result in the formation of toxic gases: a) Water treatment area - Two 500 lb containers of sulfuric acid were stored with ten 50 lb bags of sodium metabisulfite, thereby creating the potential for the generation of sulfur dioxide from intermixing, November 7, 1989. GENERAL METHOD OF CONTROL APPLICABLE IN THESE CIRCUMSTANCES INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING: 1) Store incompatible chemicals separately.
